1ST ANNUAL EMPLOYEE COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE IS AMAZING!

As part of its first Community Service Initiative (CIS) to give back to the local community, teams of JARC employees volunteered at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit on August 12th and at the Royal Oak Nature Society on August 13th.

The volunteers on the Gleaners team were:  Rick Loewenstein (Chief Executive Officer), Rena Friedberg (Chief Development Officer), Judy Burnett, Laura Ostreicher, Carol Kaczander (all part of the Development Dept.), Sandra Baldwin, Carrie Thomason (both from the Laker Home) and Susan Duffany (Respite).

For three hourse these hard-working volunteers packed boxes of assorted food items totaling an astounding 4,200 pounds.  After taking a guided tour of the entire Gleaners facility, the group enjoyed a relaxing lunch with live jazz music at downtown Campus Martius before heading back to work at JARC.

Led by Aaron Dorn (Maintenance Dept.), the Royal Oak Nature Society volunteers included:  Rick Loewenstein (CEO), Chris Hench (Chief Operating Officer), Randy Baxter (Chief Financial Officer), Laurel Berger (Harris Children and Family Division), Paul Mattson, Penny Todd (both Program Coordinators), Linda Duby (Network Administrator) and Margaret Hill (Manager of the Laker Home).  Using rakes, saws, axes and wheelbarrows, the JARC group spent several hours removing fallen logs, stick and other debris to prepare for the planting of native wildflowers in a botanical garden.  The work was physically demanding, but the team enjoyed doing something to preserve nature and beautify the community.
